Located in the middle of White Pine County, Nevada is the town of Ruth. While today there may be only 440 or so residents living in this community which served as inspiration for the Stephen King novel “Desperation”, in its heyday Ruth had close to 2300 inhabitants.
Ruth earned its namesake by being the name of the original mining claim’s daughter. Initially built adjacent to the copper producing Robinson Mine, Ruth was constructed as a company town for the Nevada Consolidated Copper Company which allowed its workers to rent the homes and enjoy the amenities provided.
Ruth continued to be prosperous well into the 1920s and was eventually taken over by the Kennecott Copper Corporation in 1933. Eventually, the town changed hands again in 1955 when the houses were sold to the John W. Galbreath Company and occupants had the option to buy their home or move. At this same time, Ruth was relocated 2 miles north to allow for the expansion of the Deep Ruth Mine.
In 1978, the mines in Ruth were closed down and the town has since been on a steady decline. Many still hold hope that once the mines re-open, Ruth will shake off its “ghost town” status and re-grow.
Ruth has a long history in the mining industry, one of the most laborious and physically taxing industries.
