The census-designated place of Fort McDermitt is a former mining community located in Humboldt County, Nevada. It was named after a military commander Lt. Col. Charles McDermit who was killed in an ambush in the late 1800s. Occupying a total land area of 17.9 square miles, Fort McDermitt is near the cities of McDermitt, Orovada, Paradise Valley, Denio, Summit Lake, Golconda, and Winnemucca. Its most notable location is the Fort McDermitt Ranch headquarters.
In 2010, census data shows that Fort McDermitt had an estimated population of 341 people, 56.2% of whom were males. The median resident age was 33.6 years with approximately 30% of the residents being under the age of 18. There were 125 households and the average household size was 3.2 people.
