Doctors Screw Up Surprisingly Often<\/a><\/em>\u201d \u00a0published by\u00a0<em>Live Science<\/em>, U.S. doctors make a shocking amount of careless mistakes such as\u00a0<a title=\"Errores quir\u00fargicos\" href=\"\/es\/abogado-de-negligencia-medica-en-las-vegas\/\">leaving a scalpel in someone\u2019s body after surgery<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Authors of an analysis published their findings in the journal\u00a0<em>Surgery<\/em>\u00a0on Dec. 19, 2012. They based their results on\u00a0malpractice\u00a0records that documented instances of mistakes such as operating on the\u00a0<strong>wrong patient or body part<\/strong>\u00a0and leaving objects inside a patient\u2019s body after surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Results from the analysis show that doctors in the U.S. leave surgical equipment such as towels, sponges, and cotton balls inside patients about 39 times per week. Results also showed that doctors operate on the wrong body part about\u00a0<strong>20 times per week<\/strong>, on average.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we describe in a study is the low end of the range. There are definitely more of these occurring,\u201d said study co-author Dr. Marty Makary, a surgeon at Johns Hopkins Medical Center and the author of a book about\u00a0<strong>hospital dysfunction<\/strong>\u00a0called \u201cUnaccountable\u201d (Bloomsbury Press, 2012).<\/p>\n<p>Study authors also reported that between 1990 and 2010, there were more than 80,000 major surgical errors committed in the U.S. Roughly 7 percent of the patients died and a third of them suffered\u00a0<a title=\"Lesiones personales\" href=\"\/es\/\">permanent injuries<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The results of this study are shocking. These types of medical mistakes are preventable and should never occur. Leaving a surgical tool inside a patient\u2019s body, for example, is the\u00a0<strong>product of negligence<\/strong>.
